The Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association

An off-trail family of hikers, dreamers and friends of the trail working

to preserve, protect and promote the long-distance hiking community.

 How to Join
Membership is Open to All

We are the largest organized group of long-distance hikers in the world with more than 1,500 members. There are absolutely no prerequisites or requirements for membership. It doesn't matter if you haven't finished any trails yet. In fact, you don't even have to be a hiker to join. Members are the heart of our organization.

We depend on our dedicated members to serve as volunteers for our annual Gathering, as trail crews on work trips, as field editors for the Companion, and as contributors to The Long Distance Hiker newsletter and our website.

Here's a copy of the ALDHA brochure you can print out for yourself and your friends. Hand out copies to hikers you know, and get them to come, too. There are details about the Gathering and other info in the brochure, which is in PDF format and can be opened with Acrobat Reader, a free program available online if you don't already have it.

At the beginning of the year we publish a booklet called the Directory that lists all members of ALDHA with their address, phone, email, trail name and hiking history.

Each person is listed alphabetically by last name. But what makes the booklet so useful is that the data is indexed two other ways, by geographic location and by trail name, so if you're stuck someplace and need a hand, try checking to see who in ALDHA lives nearby. Or, if you only remember people by their trail names, now you can look them up in the Directory, provided they're members of ALDHA of course!
